A Tale from Barcelona: The Election of a Rebel Mayor is a funny, insightful look at the rise of Spain’s social justice movement through the eyes of Ada Colau, founder of PAH (Platform for People Affected by the Mortgage Crisis) and recently elected, on behalf of a left coalition that includes the new Spanish party PODEMOS, as the first woman Mayor of Barcelona, Spain’s second-largest city. This documentary offers a bird eye’s view at the challenges and opportunities that arise when groups dream big and transform power relations from the inside-out, in the fight to build “Rebel Cities.”

The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung—New York Office is proud to host this community screening alongside the Right to the City Alliance. Since 2013, the RLS–NYC and RTC Alliance have collaborated to bring together housing activists from North America and Europe to discuss joint strategies to combat gentrification and displacement, as well as develop models of alternative housing.

The film’s director Pau Faus will be present for a Q&A after the screening.

Free admission.

ABOUT

We are Blunderbuss Magazine, a web magazine of arts, culture, and politics, an ordnance of fire and improvisation. What ties together these essays, stories, poems, photographs, comics, and other bits of aesthetic shrapnel is a common attitude of visceral humanism. We aim for earnest noise. We want to splash in the mud of lived experience, to battle for a radical empathy, and to provide a megaphone to howling assertions of human subjectivity.
