Centered on race in the United States criminal justice system, this Academy Award nominated film is titled after the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. The 13th Amendment abolishes slavery except as punishment for a crime. DuVernay’s documentary argues that slavery is being effectively perpetuated through mass incarceration.
