The Freya Project’s next fundraiser, on February 23rd, will support Refugee Women’s Network (RWN), a Georgia based organization that empowers women survivors of war to become leaders in their homes, businesses, and communities. Amid the new administration’s threat of a Muslim Ban, it is more important than ever to rally around the newest members of our nation.
For over twenty years the Refugee Women’s Network has offered a variety of essential services to refugee and immigrant women, whether they’ve been in the U.S. for three months or three years. From enrolling their children in school, to preparing the opening of their own businesses, RWN helps women on their journeys to become independent and self-sufficient.
RWN’s Social Adjustment Services, including immigration counseling as well as health and mental health services, Leadership Training, and Women’s Economic Development programs, have served more than 5000 women from over sixty countries. These women have gone on to become college graduates, entrepreneurs, and community leaders.
Help us show the women supported by RWN that walls and exclusion are not synonymous with American values.
These five determined and engaged women will read an essay about a time someone underestimated them. All proceeds from ticket sales and a portion of bar sales will go directly to Refugee Women’s Network.

KYLE McCARTHY
Kyle McCarthy’s short stories and essays have appeared in the Southwest Review (forthcoming), American Short Fiction, Harvard Review, and The Los Angeles Review of Books. A graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, she has received fellowships from Lighthouse Works, the Edward F. Albee Foundation, the Truman Capote Literary Trust, Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, and the Jerome Foundation. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Ko Im is a former network tv reporter turned viral host turned multimedia hyphenate. A content editor, Ko wrote and narrated a millenial memoir Broke, not Broken and has contributed to Allure, Nylon, Washington Post, Cosmopolitan, BravoTV, Yahoo! and USA Today. She also teaches yoga and mindfulness in the city and serves as features editor at NY Yoga + Life magazine.
TRISH NELSON
Trish Nelson is the founder and CEO of BanterGirl, as well as a producer, performer, comedian, and writer living in NYC. Outside of her weekly BanterGirl LIVE! Podcast she produces a wide variety of monthly shows throughout NYC and beyond working regularly with talent such as Women of Letters, Carolyn Castiglia, Dave Hill, and John Hodgman to name a few. She also helped to put together live shows and tours across the country for Broad City, Impractical Jokers, Jim Jefferies, Bill Burr, Chris Hardwick, and Amy Schumer, as well as many others.
TRACY FAUD
Tracy Fuad is writer currently studying poetry at Rutgers-Newark, where she also teaches writing. Her work has appeared in Ninth Letter, Sixth Finch, The Nashville Review, and Muzzle Magazine, among others. She has received support from the Vermont Studio Center and was the winner of the 2016 Montana Prize in Nonfiction.
