Breaking Up Hard To Do, But You Could’ve Done Better – Vol. III

By Hilary Campbell @cartoonsbyhil ·

Blunderbuss is proud to present an excerpt from Hilary Campbell’s new book, Breaking Up Hard To Do, But You Could’ve Done Better: Real Life Breakups & the Art They Inspired.

In first grade, Darryl was my boyfriend. He told me that he didn’t like my hair in a ponytail, and if I wore one again he’d break up with me. Cut to next day: my mom is painfully yanking my hair back into a ponytail. The kind where your hair is pulled back so tight that your eyes slant back toward your ears. Sure enough, at recess, Darryl broke up with me. I’m wearing a ponytail as I type this, but it took me a long time to feel attractive with one.

ABOUT

We are Blunderbuss Magazine, a web magazine of arts, culture, and politics, an ordnance of fire and improvisation. What ties together these essays, stories, poems, photographs, comics, and other bits of aesthetic shrapnel is a common attitude of visceral humanism. We aim for earnest noise. We want to splash in the mud of lived experience, to battle for a radical empathy, and to provide a megaphone to howling assertions of human subjectivity.
